Carolina Chickadee

"A common year-round bird of the Carolinas.  One of the first birds to use a newly placed feeder. Flies to a feeder, grabs a seed and carries it to a branch.  To get to the meat inside, holds the seed down with its feet and hammers the shell open with bill. Returns for another seed.  A friendly bird.  Can be tamed and hand fed.  Attracted with a nest box that has a 1 1/4-inch entrance hole.  Female gives a loud snake-like hiss when disturbed on nest.  Often ween with other birds (mixed flocks) in winter.  Song is a high, fast "chicka-dee-dee-dee-dee" -Stan Tekiela
