For the longest time we thought this was a House Finch or a Pine Siskin, but we learned today that it is a Female Purple Finch. The identifying features of this bird are the heavily streaked chest and the prominent white eyebrows. The other thing that threw us off was the word purple in it's name. In this case, purple, not the color, is the Latin species name
purpureus which means "crimson" or other reddish color (more distinctly seen in the male).
